outsider naturalist art

8/20/24

when do you turn into bats?
i ask the swallows
as they knit dark treetops
to close the dimming sky

wapato glows in the marsh
beside mallard’s pale breast;
black water shrouds his face

but past the willows he returns
as baby nutria
swallowing flames
from the ends of jewelweed
